You play as a silent protagonist, a young officer-in-training in the Royal Knights of Gaien. The story begins peacefully, with naval training and camaraderie among fellow knights, including your best friend Snowe Vingerhut, the son of the lord of your home island, Razril.

The peaceful training is shattered when your character becomes involved with the discovery of the Rune of Punishment, one of the 27 True Runes—mystical artifacts that grant immense power but carry a great cost. This particular Rune deals with the themes of atonement and sacrifice, consuming its bearers as they use its devastating powers.

Wrongly exiled and cast out as a traitor, the protagonist sets out on a journey across the seas to understand the Rune’s curse and stop the wars spreading across the Island Nations. As the bearer of the Rune of Punishment, you will become the central figure in uniting a scattered group of islands against a militaristic threat from the Kooluk Empire.
