Ōkami takes place in a mythical version of ancient Japan, a land where gods, spirits, and demons are real, and where the world is deeply influenced by traditional Shinto beliefs and folklore.

The player takes on the role of Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, who reincarnates in the form of a majestic white wolf. The world has fallen into darkness after the return of the eight-headed demon Orochi, who was once sealed away. As Amaterasu, your mission is to restore life, color, and balance to the world, banish the evil forces corrupting the land, and bring nature back to its full beauty.

You are guided by a tiny, loud-mouthed companion named Issun, a wandering artist who rides on Amaterasu’s head and provides comic relief, hints, and narrative progression throughout the game.
