Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a first-person shooter video game developed by DICE (Digital Illusions CE) and published by Electronic Arts (EA).
It was released for the PlayStation 2 in October 2005. Unlike the PC version of Battlefield 2, which focused exclusively on multiplayer, the PS2 version includes both a single-player campaign and online multiplayer (though online servers have since been shut down).
It is part of the larger Battlefield franchise, known for its large-scale battles and focus on both infantry and vehicular combat.
The single-player campaign is set in the near future and centers around a fictional conflict between the United States and China, with a third-party rebel faction called the Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC) playing a key role.
The plot unfolds from a unique perspective: both the U.S. and China believe the other is responsible for a series of atrocities, but it is gradually revealed that the MEC is manipulating events behind the scenes to push the superpowers into war.
The story is presented as a news documentary-style narrative, using a fictional broadcast called “UNN” to report on the war’s progression, propaganda, and misinformation. The campaign explores themes like the media’s influence in war, false flags, and the complexity of global conflict.
